Preparing for Your First Class

  • Be sure to sign in to reserve your private session or group class in advance.

  • We have hand towels available – they make a great prop. Feel free to bring your own.

  • Wear comfortable clothing that is designed for exercise. Jeans or restrictive material don’t work well. Baggy clothing tends to get in the way of your movement and may prevent your instructor from seeing your alignment.

  • Avoid eating a significant meal for 1-2 hours prior to class. It’s difficult or impossible to properly engage the core on a full stomach. We recommend eating lightly before. A handful of nuts, a piece of fruit, or a smoothie taken well in advance can help energize your workout without getting in the way.

  • Pilates may be practiced barefoot or in socks. Many students like to use “grippy” socks such as Yogitoes®, which are available online or at our sister studio, Indigo Yoga. Shoes are not allowed during class as they can damage the surfaces of our equipment, plus working the feet and toes is a crucial part of the practice. If you have a medical foot condition that warrants special consideration, please let us know in advance so we can discuss alternatives that may work for you.

  • When you begin Pilates, even if you’re a fitness enthusiast, it will be an ongoing learning process. It takes time to be able to put the pieces together and hold them in your awareness. Be patient with yourself and don’t expect perfection. There’s an art and a grace to this form of movement that goes beyond the sum of its parts. But the rewards of learning it deeply, getting it into your bones, will benefit you in all areas of your life and provide constant challenge and new avenues for exploration. Enjoy the ride!
